okay so this has been on my mind since this morning and i just need to talk about it somewhere. was doing a telecom tower inspection, 180ft guyed lattice structure, client wanted close-up visual on the antenna mounts and some corroded hardware up near the top. brought the m30 figuring the obstacle avoidance and zoom cam would make it straightforward.

got up to about the 140ft mark doing a slow orbit and the thing just went haywire. attitude mode kicked in out of nowhere, yaw started drifting, lost geostationary hold completely. i managed to back it out manually and get it down safely but my heart was going for a while there. pretty sure it was the active transmitters on the array messing with the compass. had ATTI warnings before on towers but never lost position hold that aggressively. im flying these things regularly and i still got caught off guard so just putting it out there for anyone newer to this kind of work ? disable all the sensor assists that depend on magnetometer data before you get anywhere near an active cell array, fly manual or atleast be ready to.

yeah RF interference near active arrays is legitimately dangerous and its one of those things that doesnt get talked about enough in the inspection world. some guys i know who do this full time will actually contact the tower operator beforehand and ask if they can power down or reduce output during the inspection window. not always possible but commercial clients sometimes can arrange it especially for a planned maintenance inspection. the compass interference is the obvious one but ive also heard of video link dropping out entirely on 2.4ghz setups when youre that close to certain band transmitters. occusync and o3 are better about it but still not immune.

glad you got it down okay. i always switch to sport mode as a backup habit when im near anything that looks like it might transmit, mostly because ATTI in sport at least feels more predictable to me than ATTI in normal when it catches you off guard. probably not technically correct reasoning but it works for my brain. also 180ft guyed tower with an m30 sounds like a solid setup, what zoom level were you using for the hardware closeups
