so ive been doing tower climbs for about 6 years and my company is finally looking at integrating drones into our workflow. we mostly do monopoles and lattice towers up to about 300ft, occasional guyed wire stuff out in rural areas. management wants to know if we can cut down on climber hours by doing initial condition assessments from the air before we send anyone up.

honestly i'm skeptical but also kinda curious. the main thing i keep wondering is whether the image quality is actually good enough to spot things like rust around the mounting hardware, cracked welds, that kind of thing. we had an incident a couple years ago where a corroded u-bolt wasnt caught during a visual and that was a whole thing. so the stakes are real here, not just a cost savings exercise.

anyone running M30T or similar on tower work? or even the Matrice 300 with a zenmuse? curious what camera setups people are actually using day to day versus what gets demoed at trade shows which always looks perfect.

yeah we run the M300 with a Z30 for most of our tower work and honestly the optical zoom on that thing is pretty ridiculous for close detail ? like you can hover at a safe standoff distance and still read serial numbers on the hardware. for rust and weld inspection it does a decent job but i'll be straight with you, it's not a replacement for a climber doing a hands-on check. what it IS good for is triaging. you fly it first, flag anything that looks questionable, then you know exactly where to send the climber and what to bring. cuts our prep time down a lot and the climbers appreciate not having to do full top-to-bottom inspections on every single tower.

the M30T thermal combo is solid too if you're checking for antenna heating issues or trying to find moisture intrusion points, though for structural stuff the optical zoom wins every time in my experience.

we started doing this about 18 months ago for a telecom client and the ROI math worked out pretty fast. main thing nobody tells you upfront is the data management side becomes its own job ? youre pulling hundreds of gigs of imagery per week if youre busy and you need some kind of workflow to actually make it useful. we went with a combination of Pix4D for the 3D modeling side and just plain old organized folder structure with timestamped photos for the detailed shots. nothing fancy but it works.

also worth knowing that some tower owners and carriers have their own requirements for inspection drone protocols so check that before you just show up with whatever platform you have. had one job where the client specifically required Part 107 certs for all operators AND a COA for the airspace which was a whole extra step we hadnt budgeted for.
