What are the biggest mistakes I should avoid as a first-time pilot?

Just got my first drone (DJI Mini 4K) and I'm excited but also nervous about messing something up. I've watched some YouTube videos but want to hear from real pilots - what are the most common beginner mistakes that I should absolutely avoid?

Setup: Planning to practice in a large park near my house, good weather forecasted for this weekend.

Focusing exclusively on the drone or screen while ignoring surroundings. Tunnel vision prevents pilots from noticing changing conditions, approaching people, aircraft, or obstacles outside the camera view. The 70/30 rule?spend about 70% of your attention on the drone and its surroundings, 30% on the screen, especially when learning. This was my biggest mistake starting out - got so focused on getting the perfect shot that I nearly flew into a tree branch!

Don't skip the pre-flight checklist! Skipping pre-flight checks increases the risk of crashes due to loose parts or low battery. Develop a checklist covering battery status, propellers, firmware, and GPS lock. Also, NEVER fly a swollen battery. Make sure your batteries will self discharge to 75% after 5 days by going into the battery menu. Battery management is crucial for safety.

Read the manual! I know it's boring but seriously. It is essential to thoroughly read and understand the manual for your specific drone before flying it. The manual will provide important information on operating the drone safely and effectively. If you crashed your drone and could have avoided it by reading the manual, you could void your warranty. Most questions people ask are already answered there.
