Practicing Figure-8 Maneuvers for Precision Control - Step-by-Step Technique

  • Members

Working on mastering figure-8 patterns to improve simultaneous control inputs and spatial orientation. The Figure of 8 movement is very similar to the Lazy 8, but you will now use the rudder with a great deal more effect. The easiest way to think of it is as two clockfaces with a cone in the middle.

Setup: Using cone markers at 5m intervals, starting at hover over central reference point at eye level. To fly a drone in a circle, you will use pitch, roll, and throttle at the same time. Keep the drone facing away from you, and push the right stick diagonally up and to the right. This will engage both pitch and roll at the same time, and start flying the drone in a circle to the right.

Key challenge: maintaining consistent altitude throughout the entire pattern while coordinating yaw inputs. This maneuver is excellent for developing coordination and control, as it challenges the pilot to manage multiple inputs simultaneously. What's your progression method for building up to smooth figure-8s?

Start with lazy-8s first before attempting full figure-8s. This is a simple movement that will help you to gain a basic understanding of rudder movement. So it's important you spend a little time on the lazy 8 to ensure you get the movement running smoothly.

Try practicing in simulator first with rate mode disabled - helps you focus purely on stick coordination without fighting stabilization systems. FPV simulators offer a safe and realistic environment to hone your piloting skills before taking to the real world. These virtual playgrounds allow you to practice maneuvers, experiment with different flight modes, and build muscle memory without risking your drone.
