tried my first split S today and nearly took out a tree lol

okay so context ? been flying maybe 4 months, mostly just cruising around and doing basic rolls. decided today was the day i finally commit to a proper split S instead of chickening out halfway through like usual. went for it and honestly the entry was fine but i completely misjudged how much altitude i was gonna lose and came out of it pointed directly at a very large oak tree. got out of it but only just. the quad is fine thankfully. i think my problem is im still doing them way too low, like i know thats the issue but in the moment it just looks like you have plenty of room. anyway just wanted to share because it was equal parts terrifying and the best feeling ive had flying so far

haha yeah the altitude loss on a split S catches everyone the first few times. classic mistake. do them over something flat with no obstacles until your brain starts to calibrate how much sky you actually need. you'll get it dialed pretty quick once you stop flinching on the pull out

man the first time i actually committed to one i was shaking after. that feeling when it clicks though is hard to beat. one thing that helped me was doing them higher than i thought i needed to, like embarrassingly high, just to build the muscle memory without the pucker factor. you can bring it lower once your hands know what to do automatically
