ok so this might be a dumb question but ive been playing around with the Mavic 3M for about a season now and generating NDVI and NDRE maps through DJI Terra and then trying to feed those into prescription maps for variable rate nitrogen. the data looks beautiful honestly, the five band sensor on that thing puts out really clean results when the sun angle is right and you do your calibration panel properly.

but im struggling to close the loop on whether this is actually moving the needle on yield or if im just making pretty maps. like i dont have a good enough replicated trial setup to actually prove ROI and when i talk to the agronomists they kind of shrug and say the prescription zones need more validation before they'll stake their recs on it.

is anyone here doing true VRA with drone-derived imagery at a scale where you can actually see it in your yield monitor data at the end of the season. or is most of what people are doing just scouting and flagging problem areas rather than actual input management. genuinely curious because i feel like im halfway there but missing something in the workflow.

yeah the gap between pretty maps and actionable VRA is real and most people dont talk about it enough. what i found after two seasons is that the NDVI alone isnt enough ? you need to layer it with historical yield maps and at minimum some EC soil data before the zones mean anything agronomically. once i started doing that in SMS AgLeader the prescription zones started correlating way better with what the agronomist was seeing on the ground and we got buy-in from the farmer to actually run split applicaiton trials this year.

also timing matters a ton. mid-vegetative NDRE for corn tells you something different than the same flight at tassel. took me a while to figure out what growth stage was actually predictive for the decisions i was trying to make.

honestly i think most of the drone ag stuff right now is still in the scouting phase commercially, like identifying where the problem is rather than automating the fix. the VRA integration is real but its mostly larger ops with the data infrastructure to support it. that said the Mavic 3M at its price point is kind of a game changer for smaller guys getting into this, the older options for multispectral were way more expensive and clunky to fly.
