DIY track gates - PVC vs aluminum frame comparison and cost breakdown

  • Members

Planning to build 8 regulation gates for our local racing group. Each 1m?1m gate needs 20 feet of 1/2 inch Schedule 30 PVC at $2.10 per 10-foot piece versus aluminum tubing at roughly triple the cost. Total PVC setup runs $40-55 per gate but I'm concerned about durability in outdoor conditions. PVC gates stand up straight in wind and take minor hits without falling over. Has anyone compared long-term maintenance costs? Aluminum is better for permanent tracks while PVC is ideal for portability.

Been running PVC gates for 3 seasons - they're bulletproof for the price. They break apart on hard hits and absorb the blow, taking only seconds to fix. Aluminum gates can damage your quad more on impact.

We built 12 gates using PVC pipes as frames with foam boards for various shapes. Just foam boards, PVC pipes, and creativity gets you a full course setup. Total cost was under $400 for everything including pool noodles for visibility.
