Heavy cinema camera payload options for agricultural mapping - need 2.5kg+ capacity

  • Members

Looking to mount a RED Komodo + custom multispectral filter setup (total weight ~2.8kg) for precision agriculture mapping missions. Current setup needs 45+ minute flight times over 500+ acre fields.

Currently considering the DJI Matrice 600 Pro (supports up to 10kg payload, 18min flight time under full load) vs Freefly Alta X (6.8kg capacity) vs custom hexacopter build. Priority is image stabilization quality and wind resistance at payload capacity.

Has anyone successfully flown cinema-grade cameras for agricultural work? How much does the extra weight impact gimbal performance in field conditions?

Why not split the difference? DJI Matrice 210 RTK V2 with 2.3kg capacity can handle multispectral + thermal in a lighter package. You'd get better flight times and still capture the data you need for

For that weight class, external gimbals like the DJI Ronin series can stabilize cinema cameras over 6kg, but you'll need serious lifting power. Consider the 11-44 lb payload range platforms specifically designed for professional cameras and surveying equipment.

Heavier payloads drastically shorten battery life and you'll need to balance payload weight against flight duration. Test with simulated weight first - many operators find the sweet spot is staying under 80% of max payload for real-world conditions.
