so this has been bugging me for a while. i keep seeing people argue about antenna choice like its going to save their range or fix their video issues but honestly after years of flying ive kind of stopped caring and just throw whatever came with the vtx on there. usually a lollipop or whatever was in the bag.

i did have one guy at the field tell me my video was garbage because i was running a linear whip on my vtx instead of a circular polarized antenna and that mixing polarizations kills your signal. which, fine, i know thats technically true but in practice im flying line of sight at like 200-300 meters and it never feels like a problem to me.

is there actually a meaningful real world difference between a quality cloverleaf, a lollipop, and some of the newer stuff like axii antennas when youre not flying long range? like if youre just doing a local park bash is anyone actually able to feel the difference or is this one of those forum rabbit holes where the theory is real but the practice doesnt matter much at sub 400m

the polarization mismatch thing is real and actually measurable, like you can lose 3db just from running linear against circular which is basically cutting your effective power in half. but you're right that at 200-300m with decent vtx power you probably have enough headroom that it doesnt matter in practice. where it starts to matter is when youre flying around obsticles and the multipath interference adds up, circular polarization rejects that stuff way better. so for a park bash, probably doesnt matter. for flying near a lot of metal structures or inside, it starts to actually show up.

axii antennas are noticeably better than the cheap stuff that ships with most vtx units, at least in my experience. i fried two cheap lollipops that just came apart at the connector after a few crashes before i switched to a proper pagoda on the quad and an axii on my goggles. havent had issues since and the picture does seem cleaner, though i also swapped vtx around that time so hard to isolate the variable honestly. the build quality difference alone is worth it imo regardless of the rf stuff
