so ive been flying whoops for about a year and a half now and i think im ready to step up to a proper 5 inch freestyle setup. the thing is i keep going back and forth between just buying something prebuilt to get in the air faster vs doing a full custom build and i honestly cant decide. my soldering is decent, nothing crazy but i can do motor wires and ESC connections without too much drama.

the brands i keep seeing recommended are iFlight, BetaFPV for the smaller stuff, and Diatone but i dont really know how they compare in terms of actual durability when you're throwing it around a parking garage or whatever. iFlight seems to be everywhere and the Nazgul series gets mentioned a lot but i also keep seeing people say the stock builds are kind of mediocre and you end up swapping stuff out anyway which kind of defeats the purpose of buying prebuilt in the first place.

anyone gone through this same thing? is there a prebuilt that actually holds up or should i just source parts and build something i actually want from the start

went through exactly this like two years ago. ended up getting a Nazgul5 v2 and honestly it was fine as a starting point but yeah you nailed it ? within like 3 months i had swapped the motors, put a different FC stack in because the original ESC had a weird throttle issue, and slapped a Rush Tank on it for the VTX. at that point it was basically a custom build wearing Nazgul clothes.

if your soldering is already decent just do the build. you'll know every single component, you'll know exactly what to replace when something dies, and you'll probably spend the same money or less depending on where you source. RCGroups and the usual suspects have decent group buys sometimes. the prebuilt route makes sense if you genuinely dont want to think about parts compatibility but it sounds like you're past that point honestly.

diatone gets slept on imo. i have a Roma F5 that's taken some pretty gnarly crashes and the frame is still solid. their customer support is actually responsive too which is more than i can say for some others. not saying dont build your own but if you want a prebuilt that doesn't feel like a budget compromise that's where i'd look
