okay so i finally tried to do an actual photogrammetry scan of an old barn on my property, nothing professional just wanted to see if i could get a decent 3d model for fun. been flying for about two years but always just video and photos, never mapping. used litchi to set up a grid mission, standard nadiral shots at like 100ft, i think i had 75% overlap front and side. ran it through the free tier of DroneDeploy and also tried WebODM because i saw someone mention it on here.

both outputs look kind of melted and wrong around the edges, the roof especially looks like it got droopy and one corner is just completely garbled. the center section actually looks pretty decent which is confusing. im using a mini 3 pro which i know isnt ideal for this but figured it would work for a test. did i mess something up with the mission plan or is this just a hardware limitation thing.

the melted edges are almost definitely because you didnt fly any oblique passes around it. nadiral only works okay for flat ground but for any structure with vertical faces you need to come around the sides too, otherwise the reconstruction software is basically guessing what the walls look like and it guesses badly. try adding a perimeter orbit at like 60-70 degrees camera angle around the barn and reprocess, should fix most of that weirdness. also check that your overlap was actually being honored by litchi because sometimes the altitude triggers and timing dont line up perfectly depending on how you set it up.

WebODM with default settings is kinda rough honestly, worth spending some time in the advanced options and bumping up the feature quality. i had similar garbage looking outputs my first few times and it was mostly me not knowing what the processing settings actually did. also the mini 3 pro should be totally fine for this, dont let anyone tell you otherwise, ive seen great models come out of cameras way worse than that.
