RTK failure on M350 during Structure Mode: PPK as backup strategy?

  • Members

Had a frustrating experience today with a large mapping project using DJI M350 RTK + Zenmuse P1. Lost RTK fix about 15 minutes into the flight during a complex structure inspection over industrial facility. RTK signal tends to be disconnected when city canyons or macrocells are included, reducing accuracy due to lack of RTK signal.

I'm wondering about using PPK to solve accuracy reduction caused by lack of RTK signal - you can perform PPK corrections as long as your drone provider does so. Anyone have experience with DroneDeploy's PPK processing for this specific scenario? PPK can salvage high-accuracy maps even if RTK connection dropped during mission.

Currently evaluating whether to switch entirely to PPK workflow or use hybrid approach. Flight must be at least 10 minutes capturing images for PPK solution to converge which should work for most of my projects.

I switched to PPK-first workflow after similar RTK dropouts in urban environments. You can perform PPK corrections and it would be beneficial to use GCPs when RTK-float indicates uncertainty around corrections. The post-processing adds about 15 minutes but eliminates re-flight risk.

Check your base station connection quality first. RTK needs strong, stable connection - if signal drops, so does accuracy. Many pilots jump to PPK when the real issue is poor network setup or interference from nearby structures.

Many professional drones support hybrid RTK + PPK workflow, capturing both real-time corrections and logs for post-processing, giving immediate results plus validated accuracy later. This reduces re-flight risk significantly in challenging RF environments like industrial sites.
