been flying maybe 3 months now, mostly just recreational stuff, hiking trips, some shots of my property. someone in another thread mentioned getting their part 107 and now i cant tell if thats something i should look into or if its totally irrelevant for what im doing. i dont plan to charge anyone for footage or anything like that, at least not right now.

from what i can gather the part 107 is for commercial use but ive also seen people say its worth getting just to know the rules better? the study material looks kind of intense honestly, lots of weather and airspace stuff that feels way above what i need to know. but then again maybe i should just know it. idk this might be a dumb question

not a dumb question at all, a lot of people wonder this. strictly speaking if you're flying recreationally and not getting paid you fly under the recreational rules which are a bit different and honestly simpler in some ways. you dont need 107 for that. but here's the thing -- the 107 exam does make you genuinely understand airspace classes, weather phenomena that affect flying, and a bunch of other stuff that makes you a safer and more aware pilot. i got mine even though i fly mostly for fun and i dont regret it. the studying is tedious but not impossible, took me maybe 6 weeks studying casually

also if you ever do decide to sell a photo or make any money at all from the footage, even like a one-time thing for a friend, you technically need the 107 at that point. so there's a practical argument for just having it ready

honestly i went back and forth on this for like a year and eventually just did it. the weather section is annoying but once you pass you kind of forget most of it anyway lol. the real value for me was understanding the airspace stuff because before i got it i was genuinely confused about class D vs class B and why some areas needed authorization and others didnt. now it clicks. whether thats worth the test fee and study time is up to you i guess
