so ive been doing monthly progress shots for a mid-size commercial build and the GC wants actual deliverables, like orthomosaics and volume reports not just pretty pictures. been using DroneDeploy for about 8 months now and honestly its fine but im starting to wonder if im leaving accuracy on the table compared to Pix4D.

the thing is DD is so easy to use and the automated reports are great for clients who dont know anything about photogrammetry, but every time i look at the point clouds the density just feels... off? especially around the edges of the site near the equipment yard where theres a lot of vertical relief changes. my GCP placement has been consistent, usually 5-6 targets spread across the site, and im flying at 200ft AGL with 75/75 overlap on a M3E.

anyone switched from DD to Pix4D or vice versa and actually noticed a difference in accuracy on a construction site context specifically? not looking for general software comparisons just real world on this use case

ran both for about two years on civil projects, grading and earthworks mostly. Pix4D is definitely more accurate when you dig into the calibration reports and you have more control over processing parameters but that also means more rope to hang yourself with if you dont know what youre doing. DD is more forgiving.

the point cloud density thing you're noticing is real, DroneDeploy's cloud processing does some smoothing that i think is meant to make outputs look cleaner but it does lose some detail in areas with complex geometry or high contrast. for construction volumes i actually found the numbers were close enough between both platforms when GCPs were solid, like within 1-2% which is probably acceptable depending on what your contract says. if the GC is asking for survey-grade accuracy thats a different conversation and you might want to look at what checkpoints say vs your GCPs anyway before worrying about the software.

i switched to pix4d last year and tbh the learning curve is real. like you can spend a whole afternoon just figuring out which point cloud densification settings to use for a given site. but the raycloud editor is really useful when you get weird artifacts near site boundaries which sounds like what youre dealing with.

also are you doing double grid or single pass? on sites with equipment and uneven stockpiles i started doing an oblique pass at like 65 degrees on top of the nadir grid and the point clouds got way better around anything with vertical faces. DD can do double grid now too i think but i havent tested it recently
