first real build ? confused about ESC and motor combo

ok so ive been flying whoops for like a year and finally decided to do a proper 5 inch freestyle build. ordered a bunch of stuff but now im second guessing the ESC and motor pairing and want to make sure im not gonna fry anything before i even get it in the air.

running 2306 2450kv motors and i picked up a 45A 4-in-1 ESC. i keep reading conflicting things about whether the amp rating needs to match the motors more closely or if 45A gives me enough headroom on 4S. also do i need to do anything special when soldering the battery leads to the ESC or is it basically just making sure the pads are tinned properly and keeping heat on long enough to flow?

been practicing soldering on junk boards for a few weeks so im not totally green but still nervous about the actual build.

45A on 2306s is totally fine, that's actually pretty solid headroom for freestyle on 4S. those motors will pull maybe 25-28A max per corner under hard throttle so you're not going to saturate the ESC unless you're doing something really aggressive. the combo works.

for the battery lead soldering just make sure you're using 12 or 14 AWG wire and honestly the biggest thing people mess up is not having a hot enough iron. you want at least 380-400C on those big pads or the solder won't flow properly and you get cold joints that look fine but fail later. tin the pad first, tin the wire, then bring them together and let the iron do the work. dont hold it on too long though, capacitors dont like sustained heat near them.

also cap on the battery leads before you plug anything in for the first time. like a big 1000uf low ESR cap across the positive and negative pads. saves the ESCs from voltage spikes on connection. its one of those things people skip and then wonder why their ESCs die early.

went through basically the same thing on my first 5 inch build lol, spent way too long reading spec sheets trying to figure out if my ESC was gonna blow up. it didnt. just fly it.

the soldering thing though, yeah get your iron properly hot. i used to turn mine down thinking i was protecting the components but cold joints are way more of a problem. watch a few oscar liang tutorials if you havent already, his soldering videos are pretty straightforward.
