I want to write about what actually transferred over to real flight and what didn't, because I see a lot of people either treating the sim like it's a magic fix or dismissing it entirely. My experience was somewhere in the middle and I think it's worth being honest about it.

What I Was Working On in the Sim

First thing I did was set my rates in Velocidrone to match what I'm running on my actual quad. I'm on a 5 inch freestyle build with Betaflight, running fairly mild rates right now — RC Rate at 1.0, Expo around 0.58, and Superrate at 0.65. Nothing crazy. I wanted the sim to feel as close to my real stick feel as possible so I looked up how to translate Betaflight rates into Velocidrone's rate system. There are a couple of converters online and they get you pretty close. Not perfect but close enough.

I plugged in my actual radio — a Radiomaster Boxer on ELRS — via USB and used that instead of a game controller. This matters a lot. Using a gamepad feels completely different from your actual transmitter and I think it trains slightly wrong muscle memory. The Boxer connected fine, just had to go into Velocidrone settings and map the axes.

For the first week I just flew the same two tracks over and over. Nothing fancy. I focused on not crashing, keeping smooth inputs, and actually understanding what happens when I apply too much roll too fast. One thing that clicked for me in the sim that hadn't clicked in real life — the relationship between throttle and roll in freestyle. If you drop throttle while rolling you lose authority and the quad kind of tucks weird. The sim taught me to keep that throttle alive through maneuvers.

Week Two: Trying Actual Freestyle Moves

Second week I started attempting real moves. Mostly split S, some basic jukes, and a lot of failed attempts at a split S into a dive. I'm not even going to pretend I was doing anything impressive. But I started developing a feel for how much stick input equals how much rotation, and that is genuinely something that transferred.

The move that surprised me the most was the matty flip. I had no idea what I was doing the first hundred times. But in the sim you can just crash and reset immediately with zero consequences, zero cost, zero walk of shame to go pick up your quad. I probably attempted a matty flip two hundred times in week two alone. By the end I was landing maybe 40 percent of them in the sim.

I also noticed my throttle management getting smoother. I stopped riding full throttle everywhere and started modulating more. The sim gives you a good sense of how unsmooth video looks when you're just pinning it, even if there's no actual camera jello or anything in the physics.

Week Three: Getting Bored (This Is Important)

Honestly? Week three I was getting a bit burned out on the sim. And I think that's actually a sign that I'd gotten most of what I was going to get from it at this stage. There's a ceiling to what the simulator teaches and I hit it. The physics feel close but not identical. The feedback from your goggles and the actual ground rushing at you — that's missing. The panic response, the adrenaline, the way time seems to slow down when you're about to eat a tree — none of that exists in the sim.

So I took the quad out again. Real flight. Tall open field near me, no obstacles, just sky and grass.

What Actually Transferred

Okay here's the honest breakdown.

Throttle management: Noticeably better. This was the biggest improvement. I wasn't just slamming throttle all the time. I was actually flying smoother arcs. This 100 percent came from sim time.

Orientation: Better but not fixed. The sim helped me get more comfortable with the quad being inverted or at weird angles, but real life still throws me off sometimes. When the quad is coming toward me at low altitude my brain still momentarily short-circuits. The sim helped reduce that but didn't eliminate it.

Specific moves: The matty flip? I landed it on my third attempt in real life. I could not believe it. The muscle memory was genuinely there. It felt exactly like my hands knew what to do even though my brain was slightly panicking. That was a cool moment.

Recovery from wobbles: This is where I expected improvement and didn't really see it. When my quad wobbles from prop wash or something, my real-world recovery is still pretty bad. I think the sim physics don't replicate prop wash accurately enough to train that. You kind of have to just fly real props to feel it.

Crash frequency: Down a good bit. I didn't crash at all in my first session back in real life. That was a first for me. Previous sessions I was binning it every few minutes.

My Honest Take on Sim Practice

If you're a beginner, use the simulator. Full stop. But be intentional about it. Don't just fly around aimlessly. Practice the same things you want to do in real life. Match your rates. Use your actual radio. Set up sessions with a goal.

Also don't let it replace real flying for too long. I think three weeks was about right for me and then I needed to get back on real props or the skills would have started to stagnate. The sim is a practice tool not a substitute.

My next goal is working on power loops and getting more comfortable with proximity flying — finding some low obstacles like fallen logs to weave through. I also want to bump my rates up slightly and see how it feels. Maybe go to Superrate 0.7 and see if my freestyle gets snappier without losing too much control.

Fly safe, don't ghost your props, and charge your batteries the night before so you're not standing in a field with a dead LiPo like I was two Sundays ago. Ask me how I know.

A little background — I had a tiny Tiny Whoop style quad before this, one of those little 65mm brushed things I flew around my apartment for like two months. That helped a little with muscle memory but honestly flying an actual 5-inch freestyle quad outdoors in angle mode even felt like a completely different animal. I'm not exaggerating when I say the first time I armed it and gave it any throttle I nearly had a heart attack.

What I'm Flying

My setup right now is a BetaFPV Pavo25 — yeah I know, not the most "hardcore" choice but I wanted something that would survive crashes and wasn't going to cost me $300 in parts every time I binned it. I'm running a RadioMaster Boxer with ExpressLRS and the goggles are Skyzone SKY04X Pro. I know people have opinions about Skyzone vs DJI goggles, I went analog because it was cheaper to get started and I figured I'd upgrade later once I actually know what I'm doing.

I set the Boxer up with Betaflight and loaded the ELRS firmware after watching probably six different tutorials because none of them matched my exact version. That part was genuinely stressful. But once it linked up and I saw the green light on the receiver I felt like I'd actually accomplished something.

The Simulator Time First

I want to talk about this because I almost skipped it and I'm really glad I didn't. I put in probably 15 hours in Velocidrone before I ever touched the real quad outside. I ran it with my actual Boxer over USB so I'd be using the same sticks I'd use in real life. My rates in the sim were super low at first, I think I had a roll rate of maybe 400 degrees per second and expo around 0.5 just to keep things manageable.

Velocidrone doesn't feel exactly like a real quad, especially the ground effect stuff and the way wind interacts, but it got me used to not panicking when I tilted too far in a direction. In angle mode in the sim I practiced just flying smooth laps and hovering and landing precisely. It sounds boring but it really did help.

The First Real Flight Was Humbling

I went to a big empty field near me, one of those old industrial areas where nobody really goes on weekends. I had my spotter with me (my friend Jake) mostly because I didn't want to be out there alone with my heart pounding. I put the quad in angle mode, stood way back from it, armed it, and gave it about 30% throttle.

It shot up faster than I expected even at that throttle. The goggles were on but I kept pulling them up to look with my eyes too which I know is bad. By the third battery I was starting to actually trust the video feed and keep the goggles down. The latency on the SKY04X Pro is fine for my skill level, I honestly can't imagine needing lower latency than this right now.

I crashed four times across three batteries. None of them were dramatic, mostly just misjudging my altitude on descent or panicking and dropping throttle too fast. The Pavo25 is pretty tough, I bent a prop on the second crash and just swapped it out on the field. Having spare props in my bag was absolutely the right call.

Things I Noticed That Nobody Warned Me About

The wind situation. There was a consistent 8-10 mph breeze with occasional gusts and even in angle mode that was affecting the quad noticeably. The Pavo25 is light enough that it was getting pushed around more than I expected. I need to do more reading about how people tune for wind, specifically the P and I gains in Betaflight. I know I'm not touching PIDs anytime soon but I want to understand what's happening.

Also the fatigue. After about 45 minutes I was genuinely mentally tired. Like more tired than I get doing almost anything else. I think it's the combination of wearing the goggles, the concentration, the sun, and just the emotional intensity of trying not to crash a thing you built and paid for. I only flew maybe 12 minutes total of actual air time across those batteries but I was wiped out.

The audio from the quad itself is actually useful. When I could hear it nearby I had an extra layer of spatial awareness. When it got far enough that I couldn't hear it anymore I felt less confident. That's probably a skill you build over time.

What I'm Working On Next

I'm going back to the simulator specifically to practice flying in a consistent direction and doing 180 turns without drifting sideways. That was a consistent problem for me outdoors. I also want to try just slightly increasing my rates to see if more stick precision actually helps or if it just makes things harder at my skill level.

I'm also going to spend some time just reading the Betaflight documentation on modes and features. I don't want to just follow YouTube tutorials blindly anymore, I want to actually understand what the sliders and numbers mean. Somebody on the Discord I'm in suggested just enabling one feature at a time and testing it so you actually understand what it's doing. That sounds like good advice.

The long term goal is to get comfortable enough in angle mode that it feels automatic, then move to horizon mode for a while, and eventually get to acro/rate mode. I know some people say just go straight to acro from the beginning, and I tried that in the sim and nearly lost my mind, so I'm going the slow road.

If you're reading this and you're also just starting out, the simulators are real and worth the time. And bring spare props. Seriously. And maybe a friend who can spot and also laugh at you when you land sideways in the dirt.

I'll post an update once I get a few more sessions in. Hopefully the next one involves fewer crashes but honestly I'm not counting on it.
