What digital chart tools do
Digital chart tools take the same underlying FAA chart data covered throughout this module — airspace boundaries, obstacle data, TFRs, and terrain — and present it on a live, GPS-linked map on a phone, tablet, or computer, often updating far more frequently than a printed paper chart could. Instead of manually locating a position on a paper chart and cross-referencing the legend, a digital tool can show a pilot's live location directly against the relevant airspace and hazard data in real time.
B4UFLY: the FAA's own airspace awareness app
B4UFLY is a free mobile app published by the FAA specifically to help recreational and Part 107 drone pilots check airspace conditions before flying. Entering a planned flight location gives a status indicator — showing whether that location has advisories, requires prior authorization, or has any active temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) — along with supporting information about the surrounding airspace. B4UFLY is a genuinely useful pre-flight planning tool precisely because it draws on the same underlying data this module has taught how to read directly from a chart.
It's important to understand what B4UFLY does NOT do: it does not itself grant a 14 CFR 107.41 airspace authorization. Checking B4UFLY and seeing a status suggesting the location requires authorization is the starting point, not the end point — the pilot then still needs to actually obtain that authorization through LAANC or FAA DroneZone, covered in Module 3, before flying in controlled airspace requiring it.
Other digital chart tools
Beyond B4UFLY, remote pilots commonly use LAANC-integrated third-party apps (covered in Module 3's LAANC lesson) that combine airspace awareness with the ability to actually submit an authorization request from the same interface. General aviation moving-map and chart apps, built primarily for manned aircraft pilots, also display the same sectional chart data and can be useful for Part 107 flight planning, provided the pilot understands how to read what's being displayed — exactly the skill this module has focused on building.
Why digital tools supplement, not replace, chart-reading skill
Digital tools depend on GPS signal, cellular or Wi-Fi data connectivity, and up-to-date app data — all of which can fail or lag behind reality, particularly in remote areas with poor signal or during a fast-developing situation like a newly issued TFR. A pilot who understands the underlying chart symbols, colors, and altitude notation taught throughout this module can fall back on a paper chart, a downloaded PDF chart, or simply a stronger independent understanding of what a digital tool's display actually means — rather than being fully dependent on an app functioning perfectly. This is exactly why the Part 107 Knowledge Test tests chart-reading fundamentals directly, rather than testing familiarity with any specific app's interface.
Real-world scenario: combining digital tools with chart-reading skill
Before a rooftop inspection flight, a pilot checks B4UFLY and sees a status flagging the location as being inside controlled airspace requiring authorization. Rather than treating that flag as the final word, the pilot pulls up the actual sectional chart data for the area, identifies a dashed blue Class D boundary confirming the airspace class directly, reads the boxed ceiling altitude, and then proceeds to request authorization through LAANC exactly as covered in Module 3. How to check airspace using B4UFLY before a flight

Open B4UFLY and enable location access
The app needs accurate location data to check the correct area.
Enter or confirm the planned flight location and altitude
Review the airspace status indicator and any listed advisories for that specific location.
Check for any active TFRs

Does a clear status in B4UFLY mean I don't need LAANC authorization?
No. B4UFLY provides informational airspace status only. If the location requires 14 CFR 107.41 authorization, that authorization still must be obtained separately through LAANC or FAA DroneZone.
What if I have no cell signal at my flight site?
