Introduction to Aeronautical Decision-Making (ADM)
Most sUAS accidents are not caused by a part that broke — they are caused by a decision that was already wrong before the aircraft left the ground, or a hazard the pilot noticed and pressed on through anyway. Aeronautical Decision-Making, or ADM, is the FAA's name for the structured, teachable skill of making good choices in exactly that kind of moment. This lesson explains what ADM is, why it was developed as a separate area of pilot training, and introduces the five hazardous attitudes that quietly distort a remote pilot's judgment — along with the specific antidote thought recognized for correcting each one.
What Aeronautical Decision-Making actually means
In plain terms, ADM is a structured, repeatable way of thinking through a flight decision instead of relying on gut feeling, habit, or hoping things work out. It covers the entire decision chain: recognizing that a hazard exists, assessing how serious it is, choosing a course of action, carrying that action out, and then evaluating whether the outcome was actually what you expected. ADM is deliberately taught as a distinct skill from stick-and-throttle proficiency or systems knowledge — a remote pilot can fly a perfectly smooth pattern and know every specification of their aircraft, and still make a decision that turns a normal flight into an accident.
The FAA first formalized ADM training for manned aviation in Advisory Circular 60-22, published after decades of accident investigation kept turning up the same finding: the pilot had usable information suggesting a problem, and chose to continue anyway. sUAS operations turned out to fail for strikingly similar reasons — not because a drone's motor or GPS behaves differently from a Cessna's engine or attitude indicator, but because the human being making the go/no-go call is subject to the exact same psychological pressures and blind spots. That's why ADM appears as ACS Task V.D in the Part 107 test rather than being treated as common sense that doesn't need to be taught.
The accident chain: why one bad moment rarely causes a crash
Accident investigators rarely find a single cause. Instead they find a chain of small decisions, each one individually survivable, that combine into an outcome none of them would have chosen if they'd seen the whole chain at once. A remote pilot notices the wind is gusting above the aircraft's rated limit, decides it's "probably fine," skips checking the manufacturer's wind rating one more time, launches anyway to stay on schedule, and loses control during a gust on final approach. Remove any single link — check the rating, reschedule, decline the flight — and the chain breaks before it reaches an accident.
ADM training exists specifically to make a pilot notice the early links in that chain, where a decision is still cheap and reversible, rather than the last link, where it usually isn't. The goal is not to eliminate all risk from every flight — flying always carries some risk — but to make risk visible early enough that the pilot is choosing it deliberately, not sliding into it one small rationalization at a time.
The five hazardous attitudes
Decades of accident data identified five recurring thought patterns, called hazardous attitudes, that reliably push pilots toward a worse decision. Each has a short, memorable "antidote" thought the FAA teaches as the direct counter to it — not a general safety slogan, but the specific corrective thought for that specific attitude.
- Anti-Authority ("Don't tell me.") — resents rules and regulations as unnecessary. Antidote: "Follow the rules. They are usually right."
- Impulsivity ("Do something — now!") — feels the need to act immediately without taking time to think. Antidote: "Not so fast. Think first."
- Invulnerability ("It won't happen to me.") — believes accidents happen to other people, not oneself. Antidote: "It could happen to me."
- Macho ("I can do it.") — tries to prove superior skill by taking unnecessary risk. Antidote: "Taking chances is foolish."
- Resignation ("What's the use?") — feels a lack of control over outcomes, so gives up on making a difference. Antidote: "I'm not helpless. I can make a difference."
Worked scenario: recognizing a hazardous attitude in real time
You're contracted to fly a rooftop inspection with a hard client deadline this afternoon. On preflight you notice the battery isn't holding its usual charge as quickly as normal — a possible early sign of degradation. Your first thought is "it's probably still fine for one more short flight, and I don't have time to swap batteries and still make the deadline." That thought is Impulsivity layered with a touch of Invulnerability. Recognizing it as a hazardous attitude — not just a scheduling inconvenience — is the entire point of this lesson: the antidote ("not so fast, think first") is what creates the pause needed to actually check the battery properly instead of launching on a hunch.

14 CFR 107.19 makes the remote pilot in command directly responsible for the safety of the operation — the aircraft's condition, compliance with every applicable regulation, and the overall conduct of the flight. ADM is the thinking process that responsibility actually requires in practice. A remote PIC who launches into a hazard they had already noticed hasn't just made a poor personal choice — they have failed the specific legal responsibility 107.19 places on them, whether or not the flight happens to end without incident that particular time.
ADM on a routine commercial mission
Most ADM moments on a real mission are quiet and undramatic — they don't feel like "decision-making" the way an in-flight emergency does. Deciding whether to fly an inspection route near a Class D airport boundary without double-checking the exact boundary line, deciding whether a slightly damaged propeller is "close enough" to fly, deciding whether to launch when you're mildly fatigued after a long drive to the job site — each of these is an ADM decision, made calmly, on the ground, well before any emergency exists. Treating these routine moments with the same discipline as a dramatic in-flight decision is what actually prevents most accidents.
ADM is a process, not a personality trait
A common misunderstanding is treating ADM as something only "reckless" pilots need to worry about, while careful, experienced pilots can rely on instinct. In reality, every pilot is susceptible to hazardous attitudes at different times — often specifically when they're tired, rushed, or under financial or client pressure. Why "having a safety checklist" is not the same as ADM
Many operators keep a written preflight checklist and assume that alone constitutes good ADM. Is ADM covered by a specific numbered Part 107 regulation?

Is ADM the same thing as risk management?

Can an experienced pilot "outgrow" hazardous attitudes?
