Medical Fitness Considerations for Remote Pilots

Every factor covered in this module — alcohol and drugs, fatigue, stress, vision, and heat/cold — ultimately funnels into a single legal duty: 14 CFR 107.17's requirement that a remote pilot self-assess their own medical fitness before every flight. This closing lesson explains that duty in full, and directly resolves one of the most common points of confusion for students coming from any general aviation background: unlike a Part 61 manned aircraft pilot, a Part 107 remote pilot needs no FAA medical certificate and no BasicMed at all.

What 107.17 actually requires

14 CFR 107.17 prohibits a person from manipulating the flight controls of a small unmanned aircraft system, acting as remote pilot in command, or acting as a visual observer, if that person knows or has reason to know that they have a physical or mental condition that would interfere with the safe operation of the small UAS. This is a self-assessment duty, plain and simple — there is no external medical examiner, no FAA-administered test, and no certificate to carry. The pilot themselves is the only party responsible for making this determination, honestly, before every single flight.

14 CFR 107.17 — No person may manipulate the flight controls of a small unmanned aircraft system, or act as a remote pilot in command, or act as a visual observer of a small unmanned aircraft, if he or she knows or has reason to know that he or she has a physical or mental condition that would interfere with the safe operation of the small unmanned aircraft system.

"Knows or has reason to know" — what this standard means

The phrase "knows or has reason to know" sets a standard broader than actual, conscious awareness alone. A pilot who genuinely doesn't know about a condition can't be faulted for it, but a pilot who has reason to know — because of clear symptoms, a known diagnosis, or an honest reading of their own current state — cannot claim ignorance as a defense. This ties directly back to every prior lesson in this module: a pilot experiencing clear fatigue symptoms, stress-driven tunnel vision, heat exhaustion symptoms, or medication-related drowsiness all "has reason to know" a condition exists, even without a formal medical diagnosis attached to any of them.

The condition doesn't need to be permanent or serious to count

107.17 covers any physical or mental condition that would interfere with safe operation — that includes a temporary, minor condition like a head cold or a bout of food poisoning just as much as it covers a chronic diagnosed medical condition. The regulation doesn't distinguish based on how serious or how long-lasting a condition is; it asks only whether the condition, whatever it is, would actually interfere with safe operation today.

Worked scenario: applying 107.17 to a recovering illness

You had a stomach virus two days ago and are feeling mostly recovered, though still a bit weak and not fully back to normal energy. A honest 107.17 self-assessment asks whether this residual weakness would actually interfere with safe operation of the specific mission planned — a short, simple flight in calm conditions might be reasonably assessed as fine, while a physically demanding multi-hour mission in challenging conditions might not be, even though both scenarios involve the exact same underlying physical state. The regulation asks about actual interference with safe operation of this specific flight, not a blanket rule based on the diagnosis alone.

No FAA medical certificate is required for Part 107

This is one of the most commonly confused points for students with any exposure to manned aviation: Part 107 requires no FAA medical certificate whatsoever, of any class. A remote pilot certificate application involves no medical examination, no FAA-designated aviation medical examiner visit, and no ongoing medical certificate renewal requirement. This is a deliberate structural choice reflecting the different risk profile of an unmanned aircraft operation — there is no pilot physically aboard the aircraft whose sudden medical incapacitation could directly endanger themselves in the way it could a manned aircraft pilot.

BasicMed does not apply to Part 107 either

BasicMed is an alternative medical qualification pathway available to certain Part 61 manned aircraft pilots, letting them fly specific categories of aircraft under specific conditions without a traditional FAA medical certificate, based instead on a physician's checkup and an online medical course. BasicMed is entirely a Part 61 concept with no application to Part 107 whatsoever — a remote pilot doesn't need BasicMed any more than they need a traditional medical certificate, because Part 107 never required either category of manned-aviation medical qualification in the first place.

Why the contrast matters for the knowledge test

This distinction is genuinely and commonly tested, precisely because it's a natural point of confusion for anyone who has studied for or holds a manned-aircraft pilot certificate, or who simply assumes "pilot" implies the same medical framework across every category of aviation. The clean, test-ready summary: Part 61 manned pilots need either an FAA medical certificate or BasicMed (depending on the operation); Part 107 remote pilots need neither — only the ongoing self-assessment duty under 107.17.

Chronic conditions and the self-assessment framework

A remote pilot with a chronic medical condition — diabetes, epilepsy, a heart condition, or any other ongoing diagnosis — is not automatically barred from flying under Part 107 the way an unmanaged version of some conditions might affect eligibility for a manned-aircraft medical certificate. Because there's no FAA medical certification process for Part 107, the same 107.17 self-assessment duty applies: the pilot (ideally in consultation with their own physician, not the FAA) determines whether their specific condition, as currently managed, would interfere with safe operation of a specific flight. This places real responsibility on the pilot to be honest about their own condition, precisely because there's no external medical gatekeeper checking that assessment for them.

Do I need to see a doctor before I can become a remote pilot?

No. Unlike a Part 61 manned aircraft pilot certificate, there is no medical examination requirement anywhere in the Part 107 remote pilot certification process. The self-assessment duty under 107.17 applies on an ongoing basis before every flight, not as a one-time certification hurdle.

If I have a condition that would disqualify me from a Part 61 medical certificate, can I still fly under Part 107?

Generally yes, since Part 107 has no equivalent disqualifying-conditions framework. The relevant question under 107.17 is whether the condition, as it actually exists and is managed, would interfere with safe operation of a specific flight — not whether it would pass a Part 61 medical exam.

Is there any situation where a remote pilot does need a Part 61 medical certificate or BasicMed?

Only if that person is also separately exercising privileges as a manned aircraft pilot under Part 61 — that requirement comes from their manned-aviation activity, not from anything in Part 107. Acting solely as a remote pilot under Part 107 never triggers a Part 61 medical requirement.
