Runway markings and airport signs are a visual language built to be read instantly, from a moving vehicle or aircraft, without ambiguity. A remote pilot doesn't need to memorize this language for its own sake — the point is that recognizing it lets you read what an airport is telling you about its active movement areas and traffic flow, which directly supports staying compliant with 14 CFR 107.43's no-interference rule and 14 CFR 107.37's right-of-way rule, both explained in full in the previous lesson.

Runway markings are white; taxiway markings are yellow

The single most useful rule to memorize first: runway markings are painted white, and taxiway markings are painted yellow. This color distinction alone lets you identify, from the air or from a photo, whether a paved surface is a runway (where aircraft take off, land, and travel at higher speed) or a taxiway (where aircraft move at low speed between the runway and the ramp/parking area) — a meaningful difference when predicting where and how fast an aircraft is likely to be moving.

Runway designation numbers and centerline

Each runway is marked at its end with large white numbers — the runway designator — representing the runway's magnetic heading rounded to the nearest 10 degrees and divided by 10 (a runway aligned to approximately 270 degrees magnetic is marked "27"). Because a runway can be used in either direction, the same strip of pavement has two designators, one at each end, differing by 18 (roughly opposite headings) — for example, "27" at one end and "9" at the other. A dashed white centerline stripe runs down the full length of the runway, marking the exact center for aircraft to track during takeoff and landing rolls.

Threshold markings and the runway's usable landing area

At the very end of a runway, a series of parallel white stripes — often described as looking like piano keys — mark the threshold, the beginning of the portion of runway available for landing. Some runways also have a displaced threshold, where the threshold marking is set back from the physical pavement end; the pavement before a displaced threshold can be used for takeoff roll or taxi but not for landing. Recognizing the threshold helps identify exactly where an arriving aircraft's landing flare and touchdown will occur.

Hold-short lines: where aircraft wait before entering a runway

A hold-short line — two solid yellow lines paired with two dashed yellow lines, painted across a taxiway approaching a runway — marks the point where an aircraft must stop and wait for clearance (at a towered airport) or confirm the runway is clear (at a non-towered airport) before entering. An aircraft sitting at a hold-short line is stationary and about to enter the active runway environment — a useful visual cue for anticipating imminent movement onto the runway.

Mandatory instruction signs: red background, white text

Mandatory instruction signs have a red background with white text or numbers, and mark a boundary an aircraft may not cross without specific clearance or authorization — the most common example is a runway holding position sign, showing the designators of the intersecting runway (for example, "25-7"), placed at the hold-short line described above. Red-background signs represent the strongest, most restrictive category of airport signage: cross this point only when specifically cleared or authorized to do so.

Location signs: black background, yellow border, yellow text

Location signs have a black background with a yellow border and yellow text, and simply identify where an aircraft currently is — for example, a sign reading "A" in this format confirms the aircraft is on taxiway Alpha. These signs are purely informational, telling a pilot (or, for a remote pilot observing the airport, an outside observer) their current position without instructing any specific action.

Direction signs have a yellow background with black text and an arrow, and indicate the direction to take to reach a specific taxiway or runway from an intersection — for example, a sign reading "B" with an arrow pointing left indicates that turning left leads to taxiway Bravo. These signs function like street signs at an intersection, guiding an aircraft's ground movement toward its destination.

Why sign recognition matters for a remote pilot specifically

A remote pilot isn't reading these signs to navigate an aircraft on the ground — the value is in situational awareness. Recognizing a mandatory instruction sign (red) near a specific point on the airfield tells you that's an active runway boundary, a location where aircraft movement onto an active runway is imminent once an aircraft is holding there. This directly supports predicting where manned aircraft activity will occur next, which is exactly the kind of awareness 107.43 and 107.37 compliance depends on.

Does a remote pilot need to memorize every airport sign type for the knowledge test?

The three color-coded categories covered here (mandatory instruction, location, direction) are the ones most likely to appear, along with recognizing basic runway and taxiway marking colors. The goal is functional recognition supporting situational awareness, not the exhaustive sign catalog a ground-operations specialist might need.

Why does a runway have two different numbers?
