Situational Awareness
Situational awareness is the continuous, moment-to-moment picture a remote pilot holds of what's actually happening around their aircraft — and it's the foundation every other concept in this module depends on. PAVE can't identify a hazard the pilot never perceived; DECIDE can't detect a change the pilot wasn't tracking. This lesson explains the three recognized levels of situational awareness, the warning signs that a pilot is losing it, and how it connects directly to the visual-line-of-sight requirement already familiar from Part 107's operating rules.
Level 1: Perception — noticing what's actually there
The first level of situational awareness is simply perceiving the relevant elements in the environment: where the aircraft is, its altitude and attitude, the current battery level, the presence of people or vehicles nearby, and current weather conditions. This sounds basic, but perception failures are extremely common — a pilot fixated on a live video feed can fail to perceive a person who has walked into the operating area in plain sight, simply because attention was directed elsewhere.
Level 2: Comprehension — understanding what it means
The second level goes beyond noticing individual facts to understanding what they mean together. Perceiving that the wind has picked up and separately perceiving that the aircraft is drifting slightly off its intended path are two individual facts; comprehension is connecting them — understanding that the drift is being caused by the wind, and that the wind is now closer to the aircraft's rated limit than it was ten minutes ago. A pilot can perceive all the right individual facts and still fail at comprehension by not connecting them into an accurate picture.
Level 3: Projection — anticipating what happens next
The third and highest level is projecting forward: given the current picture, what is likely to happen in the next 10, 30, or 60 seconds if nothing changes? A pilot with strong Level 3 awareness watching a vehicle approach the edge of the operating area doesn't just comprehend that it's getting closer — they project that, at its current speed, it will pass directly beneath the aircraft's flight path in roughly 20 seconds, and act before that happens rather than after.
Why all three levels matter together
A pilot can have strong awareness at one level and still fail overall because a weaker level breaks the chain. Perceiving everything correctly but failing to comprehend what it means produces a pilot who has all the right facts and still gets surprised. Comprehending correctly but failing to project forward produces a pilot who understands the current situation perfectly but reacts too late to an outcome that was actually predictable in advance. All three levels working together is what situational awareness actually means in practice.

Situational awareness is not just a soft skill in Part 107 — it's effectively codified. 14 CFR 107.31, the visual line of sight requirement, requires the remote PIC, visual observer, and person manipulating the controls to be able to see the aircraft well enough to know its location, determine its attitude, altitude, and direction of flight, observe the airspace for other air traffic or hazards, and determine that the aircraft does not endanger the life or property of another. That's Levels 1 through 3 of situational awareness written directly into a regulation — perceiving the aircraft's state, comprehending the surrounding airspace, and projecting whether it endangers anyone.
Worked scenario: losing and regaining situational awareness
You're flying a real estate exterior shoot and become focused on framing the perfect shot through the live video feed, glancing at the aircraft itself only occasionally. After a minute you realize you've lost track of exactly how close the aircraft is to a large tree at the edge of the property — you perceived the tree existed when you started the mission, but you've lost the current, updated picture of the aircraft's position relative to it. Regaining situational awareness means deliberately looking up from the screen at the actual aircraft, re-establishing its position relative to the tree and any other obstacles, and only resuming camera-focused work once that picture is current again.
Warning signs of losing situational awareness
- Fixation: becoming absorbed in one task (camera framing, a single instrument reading) to the exclusion of the broader picture.
- Complacency: assuming a familiar site or routine mission doesn't require active scanning anymore.
- Confusion: being unable to quickly answer "where exactly is my aircraft right now, and what's near it?"
- Failure to look outside the immediate task: staying fixed on a screen or controller instead of the actual environment and aircraft.
- Ambiguity or improper reliance on automation: assuming an automated feature is handling awareness the pilot has actually stopped tracking themselves.
Situational awareness in a crew versus solo
In a crewed operation, situational awareness is shared — a visual observer can perceive and comprehend something the remote PIC's attention is currently elsewhere, which is exactly why CRM (the previous lesson) treats communicating that awareness effectively as critical. A solo pilot has no one else's perception to rely on, making the personal discipline of deliberately breaking task fixation and re-scanning the environment even more important, tying directly back to the workload management principles covered under SRM.

Does flying with an FPV-style camera feed count as maintaining visual line of sight?
No. 14 CFR 107.31 requires the remote PIC (or a visual observer working with them) to see the actual unmanned aircraft with their own eyes, not through the camera's video feed, in order to determine its attitude, altitude, direction of flight, and surrounding hazards.
What's the difference between comprehension and projection?
Comprehension is understanding what the current, perceived facts mean together right now. Projection is using that understanding to anticipate what will happen next if the situation continues unchanged, allowing action before a predictable outcome actually occurs.
Can an experienced pilot lose situational awareness?
Yes. Situational awareness degrades under fixation, complacency, fatigue, or task saturation regardless of experience level — a highly experienced pilot who becomes absorbed in a specific task is just as susceptible as a new pilot.
