switching from Inspire 1 to Inspire 3 for commercial work ? worth it or overkill

so ive been running an Inspire 1 with the X5 for about 6 years now and honestly its held up fine for most of what i do which is mostly real estate, some event coverage, occasional music video stuff. but ive been losing jobs to guys with newer rigs and the clients are starting to ask specifically about raw footage and higher dynamic range which the X5 just cant deliver anymore compared to what people expect.

been looking hard at the Inspire 3 and the Zenmuse X9-8K combo and like... the image quality is obviously not even a conversation, its leagues ahead. but the price jump is brutal. im not a rental house, i dont have infrastructure for that kind of investment sitting around. anyone actually running the I3 for paid work and making it pencil out? curious how long it took you to recoup or if youre just renting it out between your own shoots to offset costs.

also the dual operator thing ? do you guys always fly with a dedicated camera op or are you mostly single piloting it? some of the narrative jobs im going after would need two people anyway but for corporate and real estate thats just extra overhead i cant always justify

ran the Inspire 2 with X7 for three years before moving to the I3 last year. the jump from I1 to I3 is going to feel massive, like genuinely a different tool. the X9 in raw is ridiculous, full frame sensor doing ProRes RAW HQ at 8K and you can actually pull that into resolve without wanting to throw your computer out a window if your machine is halfway decent.

for making it work financially ? honestly the key for me was getting on preferred vendor lists with a couple production companies. once youre in rotation with actual narrative and commercial productions those day rates are completely different than real estate work. real estate with an I3 is honestly overkill and the clients wont pay for it. but get one decent car commercial or branded content job and it starts making sense pretty fast. i do still rent it out through a local grip house on weeks im not shooting, that covers the insurance at minimum.

single piloting it is fine for controlled environments but anything with a moving subject or tight framing on a gimbal rotation youre gonna want a second person, the dual control system on the I3 is genuinely good and the camera op can do a lot more independently than on the older inspire bodies

the X9-8K is insane but have you looked at what a proper high frame rate shot costs you in terms of storage on a longer shoot day? we did a three day job last fall and went through an embarrassing amount of CFexpress. just something to factor in when youre budgeting, the media costs on that camera add up faster than people expect coming from the X5 era
