group flights with beginners - how do you handle it

  • Members

so our local group has been growing lately which is great but we keep getting new people showing up to the monthly meetups who are still on like their first or second battery ever and it's starting to create some tension i guess. not that anyone is being rude about it but you can tell some of the more experienced guys get a bit annoyed when someone nearly clips a tree or panics and cuts throttle at the wrong time. im not sure how to handle it, do other groups designate a separate area or flying time for newer pilots or just let everyone mix together and hope for the best

yeah this is a real thing. our club ended up splitting into two unofficial groups basically, the experienced guys fly one side of the field and the beginners have a dedicated area with one of the veterans volunteering to help out. works pretty well honestly and the newer folks seem to appreciate not feeling judged. took a while to get there though, there was definitely some awkward months before we figured it out

honestly i think the mixing is fine as long as people communicate. biggest issue ive seen is beginers not calling out when their battery is low and they do weird unpredictable stuff trying to land. just having everyone announce battery warnings out loud makes a huge difference. we started doing that and near misses dropped a lot. doesnt fix everything but its something
