switching to Inspire 2 for paid work ? worth the jump from Mavic Pro?

  • Members

so ive been shooting commercial real estate and some event work for about two years now using a Mavic Pro and honestly its been fine for what most clients ask for but im starting to get inquiries for proper film work, talking like actual production companies and an indie film crew that wants aerial establishing shots done right

the thing is theyre asking about raw footage and the Mavic just cant deliver what they need obviously, so ive been looking hard at the Inspire 2 with the X7 camera and the CinemaDNG workflow and it seems like the obvious step up but the cost is just... significant. rental vs buy is something im genuinely weighing here

anyone whos actually used the Inspire 2 on set or for paid productions want to chime in on whether the dual operator setup is actually necessary or can one person manage it reasonably for simpler shots? i know the two-pilot thing is kind of the intended workflow but im mostly doing solo ops right now and dont want to build my whole operation around needing a second person every time

ran the Inspire 2 with X7 for about 18 months on commercial work, music videos, couple of short films. single operator is totally doable for straightforward stuff ? wide establishing shots, slow pushes, that kind of thing. where it gets hairy is when the director wants dynamic camera movement AND specific flight paths at the same time, thats when not having a dedicated cam op really shows. ive had moments where i was fighting the sticks trying to reframe while also keeping the flight path clean and you can just tell in the footage

the CinemaDNG files are genuinely a different league though. handed off footage to a colorist on one job and she literally stopped and asked what drone it was because the skin tones in some of the shots were holding up like a proper cinema camera. that doesnt happen with compressed H.264 from a consumer bird. if the productions youre targeting are serious, X7 with L-mount glass is the answer, just go in knowing the workflow is heavier and the batteries drain faster than youre used to

dont sleep on renting first honestly. i bought mine before really understanding how different the maintenance overhead is compared to smaller drones and the first time i had to deal with a motor replacement i kinda wished i had eased in slower. not saying dont buy, just the jump from a Mavic in terms of like, everything around the actual flying is bigger than people expect
