flying in iceland next month, any tips?

  • Members

so ive been planning this trip to iceland for like 6 months and obviously the drone is coming with me. got a mini 3 pro. from what i can tell the rules there are actually pretty reasonable compared to some other countries but honestly im still a bit confused about the open category stuff and whether i need to register beforehand or if i can just do it when i land. anyone done this recently? also super curious about flying near the glaciers and whether theres any restricted zones i should know about. weather looks like itll be a nightmare but thats kind of expected i guess

went last year in october and honestly the wind was the biggest issue, not the rules. the regulations are pretty relaxed compared to like france or italy but you do need to be registered if youre in the open A2 or A3 category. i just did it online before i left took maybe 20 minutes. reykjavik and around the national parks are the tricky spots, theres some no fly zones around keflavik obviously and a few conservation areas. just download the icelandic transport authority app thing, i forget what its called but you can search it. the glaciers were absolutely worth it though, some of the best footage ive ever shot

not iceland specifically but ive found that for most european countries if your drone is under 250g you skip a lot of the headache. mini 3 pro should be fine in most open category situations. just double check the specific national park rules cause those can be different from the general country rules, parks often have their own thing going on
