flying in iceland next month, any tips?

  • Members

so ive been planning this trip to iceland for like 8 months and obviously the drone is coming with me. ive done some reading on the rules there but its honestly a bit confusing, some sites say you need to register, some say you dont depending on your drone class. im bringing my mini 4 pro so hopefully that keeps things simple but i really dont know

also curious if anyone has actually flown there, like what spots were worth it and were there any spots where rangers or whoever just told you to put it away. i know vatnajokull is a national park and im assuming thats a no-fly but not 100% sure

went to iceland two summers ago with my air 2s, the rules werent too bad honestly. you do need to register with the icelandic transport authority if your drone is over 250g, i remember doing it online and it wasnt that painful. took like 20 mins

vatnajokull yeah stay away unless you get explicit permission, and honestly i wouldnt risk it even then because the wardens there are actually pretty serious about it. the highlands though if you can get out there the shots are insane, just check wind because it can go from calm to absolutely howling in like 10 minutes out there, lost my ND filter cap chasing it across a lava field lol

not been to iceland but i travel with my drone a lot and the thing that always saves me is just downloading the official aviation authority app for whatever country im going to, most of them have one now. beats trying to piece it together from random travel blogs that are usually outdated anyway
