almost lost my mavic flying in the mountains, wind came out of nowhere

ok so this is partly a cautionary tale and partly me just needing to vent because it was genuinely terrifying. was up in the dolomites last month, beautiful clear morning, checked the windy app and everything looked calm. got maybe 400 meters out over this valley and then out of absolutely nowhere the wind just... hit. like the kind that comes off the ridgelines when the temperature shifts. drone was fighting hard, i could see it in the footage later, just getting pushed sideways.

i immediately hit return to home but honestly i think manually flying it back low was the smarter call in hindsight, RTH just climbs to whatever altitude you set and up high was exactly where the wind was worst. got it back but battery was at 8% when it landed and my hands were shaking. mountain flying is a totally different thing than flying at home in a field, the air is just unpredictable in ways windy.app cant really capture at that resolution.

ugh been there. lost a phantom 3 in the swiss alps years ago, different situation but same basic problem - valley winds and rotor wash off the terrain dont show up in any forecast until youre already in it. these days i wont fly more than like 200m out in mountain terrain no matter how calm it looks. the views are still incredible at that range honestly and your nerves will thank you

this is exactly why im scared to take mine anywhere mountainous. glad you got it back though. did the footage actually turn out useable or was it too shaky? curious if the stabilization held up under those conditions
