DJI Mini 3 Pro keeps losing signal after 1.5km - 5GHz vs 2.4GHz analysis

  • Members

I'm consistently losing connection with my Mini 3 Pro at around 1.5km, despite being in open farmland with clear line of sight. Currently using 2.4GHz on auto channel selection. Interference is minimal - nearest cell tower is 8km away, no power lines in the area.

  • Controller battery at 100%, drone at 85%+
  • RC-N1 controller with latest firmware (01.02.0300)
  • DJI Fly app v1.8.6 on Android 13
  • Tested at 150m AGL to avoid terrain masking

Should I switch to manual 5.8GHz channel selection, or is this normal range for this setup? Looking for real-world performance comparisons from other Mini 3 Pro users.

Switch to 5.8GHz immediately. The 2.4GHz band is overcrowded even in rural areas - farm equipment, IoT sensors, and weather stations all contribute to interference. I made this change six months ago and haven't had disconnection issues since.

Make sure your controller antennas are parallel to each other and perpendicular to the drone's position. Most people point them at the drone which actually reduces signal strength. Also verify your antenna connectors aren't loose - loose connections are a common cause of disconnection issues.

1.5km seems low for that setup. The 2.4GHz band offers greater range but is more prone to congestion, while 5.8GHz provides better interference resistance but shorter range. Try the 5.8GHz switch first, but also check your USB cable condition - corrupted data transmission can manifest as range issues.
