so ive been flying cheap whoop stuff for about a year and finally want to step up to a proper 5 inch freestyle rig. my soldering is decent enough, i built a tiny whoop from scratch a while back and didnt completely destroy it, but i keep going back and forth on whether to just grab something like a Diatone Roma F5 or a BetaFPV Aquila or whatever and be done with it, vs sourcing everything myself.

the argument for building is obvious ? you know every single component, you can pick exactly what motors and stack you want, and when something breaks you know how to fix it because you put it together. but honestly the prebuilts have gotten pretty decent lately and i dont know if the time investment is worth it when im still learning freestyle basics. like am i gonna be crashing so much that it doesnt even matter what i built.

anyone gone through this and have opinions either way? specifically curious about the Diatone stuff since ive seen a lot of people running them but also heard the QC can be a bit hit or miss depending on the batch

honestly the prebuilt vs build thing is kind of a false choice at the intermediate level. ive done both and the real answer is just: do you want to fly sooner or do you want to learn more. prebuilts are fine, the Diatone frames are decent and the Roma series flies well out of the box, but yeah the QC thing is real ? i got one with a motor that was slightly bent from the factory and it took me a while to figure out why the thing was vibrating like crazy on certain throttle points. had to dig through blackbox logs to even narrow it down.

if you can solder and you have time, building teaches you way more and you end up with a quad thats actually tuned to your preferences. but if you just want to send it and learn freestyle, grab a prebuilt and start crashing. you'll learn to fix stuff either way trust me

ive got a roma f5 v2 and its been solid for me but i also reflashed betaflight immediately and retuned basically everything so idk how much credit to give diatone at that point lol. the frame itself is pretty burly though, survived some pretty rough concrete meetings
