I'm putting together my first filter kit for video work and torn between getting regular ND filters or splurging on the ND/PL combo versions. Some people swear by it, and say that if you're gonna use ND filters, you might as well use some that can work as PL filters too. Some say that it's too impractical to use on a drone, and you can achieve some of the effect in post-production anyway. What's your real-world experience? Do the polarizers actually make a noticeable difference or am I better off spending that money on more ND filter options?

Polarisers are vastly over-rated for drone use and to use them properly is more trouble than they are worth. This darkens the image considerably, but only when facing one direction. Rotate the drone and your exposure changes. Save your cash and get a good variable ND instead.

As above, polarizing filters are very "directional", but if you want "that shot" over water (especially clear water) they are great, especially in the midday AZ sun. But when used correctly such as cutting through glare off water, polarizers can produce unique pictures. They have their place but definitely situational.

I leave this filter on my drone and only take it off if it gets too dark for 1/50th at ISO 200... I have used up to the ND16/PL filter for flying over a lake in bright mid-morning sunshine. Given the choice between the combination polarizing and neutral density filter (ND/PL) versus just a straight neutral density filter (ND) I almost always choose the combination filter for the added befits of polarization.
