RF interference near cell towers - distance vs frequency considerations

  • Members

Planning some cell tower inspections and trying to nail down safe operating distances for different RF scenarios. Getting conflicting info - some say 26 feet average from antennas is when issues start, others report problems at much greater distances.

Main question: For towers with unknown transmission power/frequencies, what's a practical rule of thumb for minimum standoff distance? I've got a Z30 for zoom capability, but wondering if that's sufficient for detailed antenna inspections or if I need to risk getting closer.

Considering investing in an RF Explorer spectrum analyzer to check interference levels on-site before flights. Worth the $400 investment for regular tower work?

RF exposure generally isn't a concern for Part 107 operations since we don't get close enough to antennas, but interference can definitely cause control issues. I always start with a test hover at 100+ feet and work closer gradually while monitoring signal strength.

RF Explorer is absolutely worth it - I've caught interference issues that would have caused crashes. You can see your drone's transmission frequency on the display and check if the tower is encroaching on those bands before you fly.

I did cell tower inspections for a year, got so close the blades almost touched every antenna. ZERO WORRIES, ZERO INTERFERENCE - but that's just my experience with specific equipment. Your mileage may vary depending on tower power and drone model.
