tower inspections ? what drones are people actually using, the wind up high is no joke

been lurking here for a while but finally have a reason to post. our company just started getting into cell tower and transmission line inspection contracts and im trying to figure out what platform makes sense. we've been using a phantom 4 pro which is fine for rooftops and general infrastructure stuff but the first time i flew it up around a 200 foot lattice tower in any kind of wind it got sketchy real fast. thing was drifting all over and trying to hold position near the structure with all that metal messing with the compass was just stressful. almost put it into the steel.

i know a lot of the serious tower inspection companies run the matrice line or even the autel evo max for the obstacle avoidance but im not sure if thats actually necessary or if im just not flying it right. do you really need a dedicated industrial platform for this or is pilot skill and patience the main thing? also does anyone have experience with the interference issues near broadcast towers specifically, thats our next contract and im a little nervous about it.

yeah the compass interference near lattice towers is a known thing and its not just you flying wrong. most experienced tower inspection pilots switch to ATTI mode or use GPS with extra caution and just accept that the hold won't be perfect. some guys disable compass altogether and fly manual which honestly at that point you better know what you're doing. the matrice 300 handles it better partly because of the redundant IMU and dual GPS setup but even that isn't immune.

broadcast towers are a whole different animal. the RF environment can be really nasty, ive seen guys lose video link entirely within like 30 feet of an active antenna array. some people run hardened controllers or use the enterprise versions with the higher frequency options. definitely do a non-broadcast day test first if you can and check with the tower crew about transmission schedules because some stations will cut power temporarily for inspections.

we switched from the p4p to the m300 for tower work and its night and day, not gonna lie. the wind resistance alone is worth it, that thing holds position in conditions where the phantom would be fighting for its life. plus with the H20T payload you get zoom, wide and thermal in one unit which for transmission line work is basically ideal because you can spot hot spots on insulators and connections from a safe standoff distance.

the cost is obviously brutal compared to a phantom setup but if you're doing this commercially the efficiency gains and reduced re-fly rate pays it back. also check what your client actually requires for deliverables because some tower owners have specific requirements now for image resolution and reporting format and the enterprise platforms integrate with inspection software way better. dronedeploy and scopito both have tower specific workflows if you're not already looking at those.
