so ive been flying my mini 3 for about 6 months now and I mostly fly in parks and open fields near my house, never really had an issue. but my buddy told me I need to get LAANC authorization every single time I go out and I honestly didnt even know what that was until like a week ago. I looked it up and it seems like it's only for controlled airspace? but how do I know if I'm in controlled airspace. I opened the DJI fly app and there's all these colored circles and zones and I genuinely dont know what half of them mean. some are gray, some are orange, some are red. is there like a simple explanation somewhere or do I need to read the whole FAA website because that thing is a nightmare to navigate

ok so the short version is you only need LAANC if you're flying in class B, C, D, or E airspace that's got a surface area ? basically anywhere near an airport. if you're out in the middle of nowhere or in class G airspace you don't need it. the colored zones in the DJI app are a mix of things, some are FAA controlled airspace and some are just DJI's own warnings which honestly makes it more confusing than it needs to be. best thing to do is cross reference with the B4UFLY app from the FAA or just use AirMap, they're a bit clearer about what actually requires authorization vs what's just a heads up. and yeah LAANC is automatic approval usually takes like 30 seconds through apps like Aloft or AirMap so it's not a big deal once you know how to use it

the DJI app color system is honestly terrible for this, i stopped relying on it a while back. red means you're not flying period, but the orange and gray stuff is where it gets murky. i'd just download Aloft and use that as your main preflight check, it's way clearer about what needs LAANC and what doesn't. also worth noting that even if an area looks clear you should always check for temporary flight restrictions, TFRs, especially if there's any kind of event or emergency going on nearby. got caught out by one near a wildfire area last summer, nobody got in trouble but it was a close call
