using a drone for roof inspections ? worth it or still too much hassle?

so ive been doing residential and light commercial roofing inspections for about 3 years now, mostly boots on the roof old school stuff, and a buddy of mine keeps telling me to just get a drone and stop climbing. i finally tried his Mavic 3 Classic last month on a flat commercial roof job and honestly i get the appeal but im not fully sold yet.

the thing is the footage was great, like genuinely really clean and i could zoom in on the membrane seams no problem, but when i tried to get under the parapet edges i kept getting weird wind buffeting and had to just go up there anyway. maybe thats a pilot skill issue i dont know. also the client wanted a full report with annotated screenshots and that workflow took me almost as long as just doing it manually.

anyone actually doing this at scale, like for insurance adjusters or property managers? is there a point where the time investment in learning the software side pays off or am i just not there yet

yeah the parapet thing is just something you work around honestly, you learn to read the thermals and low pressure pockets near walls pretty quick. i do about 30-40 commercial roofs a month now and i wouldnt go back. the software side was the real learning curve for me too ? i use DroneDeploy for the orthomosaic outputs and it took maybe 2 months before i was generating reports fast enough to feel worth it. the annotated report thing specifically, once you have a template locked in its maybe 20 minutes of work per property. the real win is the liability reduction. i stopped putting guys on roofs with questionable load ratings entirely for initial assessments.

what drone are you actually planning to buy though, the Mavic 3 Classic is decent but if youre doing this professionally you might want to look at something with a proper thermal option down the line. moisture under membrane is basically invisible on RGB and thats where you miss stuff
