Part 108 BVLOS rules finally coming - what does this mean for recreational pilots?

Exciting news! The FAA is instructing to publish a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for Part 108 (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) within 30 days and finalize it within 240 days. I've been following this for months and it sounds like the FAA plans to shift BVLOS into a dedicated regulatory framework under Part 108, making it a simpler process for operators to obtain approval for BVLOS operations.

But I'm wondering - will this affect us recreational flyers at all? Or is this purely for commercial operations? The technical requirements sound pretty intense.

Great question! From what I understand, Part 108 is primarily focused on commercial operations. Package Delivery: Amazon, UPS Flight Forward, and Zipline are actively pursuing BVLOS to make drone delivery cost-effective... Infrastructure Inspection: Power lines, pipelines, and railways are often far beyond a single operator's visual range. Recreational pilots will likely stick with Part 107 rules.

As a newbie, this stuff is way over my head! ?? I'm still trying to figure out basic VLOS requirements. In general, drone pilots must fly within Visual Line of Sight (VLOS). Flying BVLOS and EVLOS is prohibited unless you receive special permission from the FAA. I think I'll master the basics first!

Even if you're recreational now, it's worth understanding where the industry is heading. For FAA Remote Pilots, this means new opportunities ? but also more regulations to learn. Even if BVLOS rules are still being finalized, here's how you can prepare today: Master Part 107 Knowledge: Understanding airspace, NOTAMs, and crew responsibilities will be crucial.
