finally building my first 5" freestyle quad ? overwhelmed by motor choices

  • Members

ok so ive been flying whoops and a couple prebuilts for about a year now and i finally decided to just go for it and build something from scratch. been watching builds on youtube for like 3 months and i think i have a decent idea of what im doing but motors are killing me.

i settled on a 5" because thats just kind of the standard i guess, going with an O3 air unit for digital, and ive got a Mamba F722 stack sitting in my cart. frame is probably gonna be the ImpulseRC Apex because i handled one at a meetup and it felt solid. anyway the motor question ? im between the Xing2 2306 2450kv and the T-Motor Velox 2306 2450kv and i honestly cant tell the difference from specs alone. budget isnt really the issue, more just want something that isnt gonna give me grief on the bench or in the air for a while. running 6S. anyone been through both of these or have a strong opinion either way?

random thing but if youre going Apex + O3 make sure you plan your stack mounting before you commit to that Mamba ? the Apex has some quirks with where the ESC sits depending on which variant you got.

the Velox motors are genuinely great, been running them on my main 5" for probably 8 or 9 months now and zero issues. the stators on those are wound really clean and they hold up to crashes better than i expected. i did smoke a set of Xing2s on a pretty hard low-altitude tumble last summer ? could have just been bad luck honestly but i've heard that before from other people too. on 6S with 2450kv you're gonna have plenty of punch either way so its really splitting hairs at that kv. if the price difference is minimal just grab the T-Motors and move on, you'll be thinking about why your PIDs feel like garbage way more than you'll be thinking about the motors lol
