ok so ive been flying my mini 3 for about 4 months now and honestly the whole airspace authorization thing is still really confusing to me. i downloaded aloft and sometimes it says i need LAANC authorization and sometimes it just lets me fly, but i genuinely dont understand the logic behind when i need it vs when i dont. like last week i was at a park and it showed a yellow zone and i wasnt sure if i could just fly or if i needed to actually request something through the app. i ended up not flying because i didnt want to get in trouble but honestly im not even sure i did the right thing by waiting.

also is the authorization instant usually or does it take days? someone told me it depends on the altitude you request and im not sure if thats true either. just trying to figure out the actual rules here instead of guessing every time i want to go out

so the yellow zones you're seeing are controlled airspace ? usually around airports with a certain radius. LAANC is the system that lets you get near-instant authorization for those areas, and yeah it's usually instant as long as you're requesting within what they call the UAS Facility Map grid ceiling for that specific area. if the grid shows 0ft for where you want to fly, LAANC won't approve it automatically and you'd have to do a manual waiver request which can take weeks.

the park situation depends entirely on where the park is. if it's inside controlled airspace, yellow basically means you need authorization before you fly. if it's Class G airspace (uncontrolled) it might just be showing you something informational. aloft and B4UFLY are both decent for checking but i usually cross reference with the FAA's own sectional charts when i'm not sure. takes a bit to learn to read them but worth it.
