finally built my first 5inch freestyle quad and im kind of lost on tuning

so i finally pulled the trigger and built my first proper 5inch after flying a bunch of prebuilt stuff for like a year and a half. running a stack i probably shouldnt have picked for a first build - HGLRC F722 with the 45A ESC stack, T-Motor F60 Pro IV 2400kv motors, and a Foxeer Razer frame i got on sale. props are HQ 5149s for now.

betaflight is just... a lot. ive watched maybe 8 hours of joshua bardwell videos and i think i understand what RPM filter is supposed to do but every time i touch the filter settings it either sounds like a lawnmower or goes completely limp on the throttle. im running stock PIDs right now because i was told thats the right starting point before you actually fly it but the thing wobbles on fast rolls and i cant tell if thats a PID issue or if my motor screws are loose or what

also is dshot600 actually better than dshot300 for this setup or does it not matter at all at my skill level. asking because i saw conflicting stuff on reddit

the wobble on fast rolls is almost definitely P term being too high or D being too low, one or the other. before you even go near filters id suggest checking your motor screws AND your prop nuts because loose hardware will trick you into thinking its a tune issue when its just mechanical slop. happened to me like three times before i started routinely blue loctiting everything.

on the dshot question, honestly at your stage it doesnt matter. dshot300 is totally fine, the difference between 300 and 600 is not something you'll feel when youre still sorting out why your rolls are wobbly. get the motors spinning consistently first, worry about that later.

im kind of in the same boat lol, built mine two months ago with pretty similar parts actually. what helped me a lot was just running the stock Betaflight presets for 5inch freestyle instead of trying to dial stuff manually right away - at least you get a baseline that someone else has verified flies without being crazy. then you can start moving sliders and actually hear what changes. the RPM filter stuff especially, dont touch that until you know what your baseline noise floor sounds like on blackbox
