switching from X7 to X9 on the Inspire 3 ? actually worth it for narrative work?

so ive been running an Inspire 2 with the Zenmuse X7 for about four years now and genuinely love that setup, clients are happy, footage cuts well, i know the system inside out. but ive been getting more narrative and commercial work lately where people are asking specifically about raw recording and the dynamic range conversation keeps coming up.

been looking hard at the Inspire 3 with the X9-8K and the full frame sensor is obviously a different world on paper but im trying to figure out if its actually moving the needle on real sets or if its just a spec bump that looks good on a quote. anyone running the X9 on proper paid work? curious mostly about how the ProRes RAW workflow holds up when youre handing off to a colorist who maybe isnt used to the DJI ecosystem, and whether the thermal management at longer hover times is actually solved or still a thing you babysit.

ran the X9-8K on a car commercial last spring and honestly the colorist didnt even clock it was drone footage until i told him, he thought it was a Movi shot from ground. the ProRes RAW files are hefty but any modern colorist who knows Resolve is fine, DJI color science has gotten legitimately good. thermal stuff ? yeah you still feel it on long sustained hovers over 15 minutes in warm weather, the gimbal will occasionally do a micro correction you wouldnt see with a moving shot but on locked off stuff it shows. not a dealbreaker just something to plan around. if your X7 work is already getting you the jobs i wouldnt panic but if full frame is coming up in briefs then yeah the jump makes sense.

the workflow thing is a real consideration tbh, i handed off X9 RAW to a post house once who were used to RED and ARRI and there was definitely a learning curve on their end, not impossible but you might spend some time on a call walking through it. just worth flagging to your colorist before the job not after.
