flying in wind ? how do you actually get better at it

  • Members

so ive been flying for about two years now and i still feel like wind is my biggest weakness. like i can do pretty clean proximity stuff in calm conditions but the moment gusts start hitting 15-20mph im just fighting the aircraft the whole time and everything looks garbage in the footage.

i know the obvious answer is just fly in wind more but i feel like im not actually learning anything, just surviving. does anyone have like a structured way they practiced this or is it really just hours and hours of exposure. i fly a 5" freestyle build mostly but ive also noticed my cinewhoop handles it completely differently which makes sense i guess.

also curious if anyone has thoughts on whether angle mode vs acro makes a bigger difference in high wind than people talk about. i refuse to go back to angle mode but sometimes i wonder if im making it harder than it needs to be lol

the thing that actually helped me was picking a fixed point and just hovering on it in wind for like 20 minutes straight. sounds boring as hell but it forces you to anticipate gusts instead of reactin

honestly the cinewhoop vs 5" thing you mentioned is interesting because i notice that too. my bigger quad punches through gusts way better but the cinewhoop just gets thrown around and you have to fly

the thing that actually helped me was picking a fixed point and just hovering on it in wind for like 20 minutes straight. sounds boring as hell but it forces you to anticipate gusts instead of reacting to them, and thats really the whole game. once you stop chasing the aircraft and start reading how it wants to drift you can stay way ahead of it. i do this on a 3.5" micro now mostly but same principle applies to bigger builds.

as for acro vs angle in wind, acro is definitely harder to manage but your corrections can be more precise when you actually know what youre doing. angle mode will fight you in weird ways when the FC is trying to self level against a sustained crosswind. stick with acro, just accept the learning curve is real.
