gimbal keeps drifting left after a hard landing, tried recalibrating like 4 times

  • Members

so i came down pretty hard on my mavic a few weeks back, nothing looked broken, props were fine, body was fine, but ever since the gimbal slowly drifts left during flight. not a lot, maybe like 3-4 degrees over a 10 minute flight but its noticeable in footage especially on slow panning shots. i've done the calibration in the app probably four times now and it helps for like the first flight and then comes back.

im thinking either the ribbon cable got slightly damaged or maybe one of the gimbal motors is having issues holding position. the roll axis looks level on the ground its more of a yaw thing i think. does anyone know if this is something that can actually be fixed at home or is it a send-it-back situation. i really dont want to deal with DJI support again after last time lol

the ribbon cable was my first thought too. even a micro crease in it can cause intermittent signal issues to one of the gimbal axes and the gimbal controller sort of compensates until it cant anymore.

the ribbon cable was my first thought too. even a micro crease in it can cause intermittent signal issues to one of the gimbal axes and the gimbal controller sort of compensates until it cant anymore. if youre comfortable opening it up you can usually inspect the ribbon without fully disconnecting anything, just see if theres any visible damage near the flex points. theres a few good teardown videos for that specific model, i'd look before sending it anywhere.

the other thing ? and this sounds dumb but ? make sure theres nothing physically catching on the gimbal housing when it moves. sometimes after a hard landing a tiny piece of debris or a slightly bent cover piece will create just enough resistance to throw off the motor holding torque.

honestly i've had similar drift and it turned out to be the IMU needing a full recal not just the gimbal one. theres a separate IMU calibration buried in the settings, most people dont do it because the app doesnt really push you toward it. worth trying before you crack it open. wont fix a hardware issue obviously but rules it out at least.
