prebuilt FPV quads, are they actually worth it or is it just paying for convenience

this might be a dumb question but im genuinely curious what the veteran guys think. i see a lot of people on here talking about full custom builds and acting like prebuilts are somehow lesser, but then i also see people recommending Iflight or Flywoo stuff to beginners all the time so im confused about where the community actually stands on this

like if you buy a Flywoo Explorer or whatever, is the electronics inside actually worse quality than what youd pick yourself or is it more just that the tune might not be dialed in exactly how you want it and you dont learn the skills. genuinely asking because ive been trying to figure out if i should spend my time building or just get something that flies out of the box

been watching a ton of Joshua Bardwell and he seems to lean toward building but he also reviews prebuilts positively so i cant quite figure out where the line is

the components in prebuilts from the major brands are usually fine, sometimes actually the same stuff youd pick yourself like a Foxeer cam or Rush tank VTX or whatever. the real differnce is that they buy in volume so margins are tight and corners get cut somewhere, usually the capacitors or the ESC quality on budget models. and yeah the tunes are often mediocre out of the box, not unflyable just not as crisp as a custom Betaflight tune

honestly if youre a beginner the prebuilt is probably smarter because youll crash it learning and then when you fix it youll have learned the build skills anyway. just dont expect it to fly like someone elses perfectly tuned whip

i just think the whole prebuilt vs custom debate is kind of overblown. flew prebuilts for two years had a blast, now i build my own and its also great. the skills are useful but theyre not like some sacred gate you have to pass through. get whatever gets you in the air faster and worry about the rest later
