motor replacement after crash ? is it worth trying to fix or just buy new

  • Members

so i binned my 5inch pretty hard into a concrete wall last weekend, my fault, was flying too close to some buildings and misjudged the gap. one of the rear motors is definitely gone, wont spin at all when i plug in, and the mount got bent up a bit too. frame is cracked at the arm but not completely snapped.

the motor is a T-Motor F40 pro, which isnt exactly cheap to replace, and im wondering if anyone has actually tried disassembling these and fixing the windings or if thats just a waste of time. ive seen some youtube videos where guys rewind motors but that looks like a massive headache. the frame crack im less worried about since ive got some spare arms around.

also the ESC on that corner is reading weird in BLheli, keeps throwing desync warnings now even after i swapped to the spare motor i had sitting around. wondering if the ESC took a hit too or if its just a config thing. kinda frustrated right now honestly

yeah i wouldnt bother trying to rewind, i tried it once on a cheaper motor and it was honestly not worth the time at all. just get a new motor. and if the ESC is acting sketchy after the crash i would

desync after a crash is almost always the ESC taking physical damage even if it looks fine visually. ive had caps get knocked loose or traces crack in ways you just cant see without a magnifying glass. id pull the stack and look real closely around the solder joints near the motor pads on that corner. if you see any cold joints or lifted pads thats probably your culprit.

as for rewinding the motor, i mean technically possible but the F40 pro uses pretty thin gauge wire and getting the same winding pattern back is not fun. unless you do this regularly its probably going to take you longer than just ordering a replacement, and the end result might not even be balanced properly. i usually keep a couple of spares on hand specifically because of situations like this. the frame repair though yeah just swap the arm and youre fine, ive got frames running on their third set of arms at this point.

yeah i wouldnt bother trying to rewind, i tried it once on a cheaper motor and it was honestly not worth the time at all. just get a new motor. and if the ESC is acting sketchy after the crash i would just replace it before it takes out the new motor too, ive made that mistake before and it sucks to lose two motors to one bad ESC
