Started with RTF kits (DJI Avata, then iFlight Nazgul BNF) but I'm finally ready to tackle custom builds. The breaking point was waiting 2 weeks for a replacement ESC that I could have swapped in 30 minutes if I understood my stack.

For anyone on the fence: yes, prebuilt gets you flying faster, but you hit a wall when repairs are needed. I've spent more on shipping damaged quads back to manufacturers than a decent soldering station would cost.

Current plan: GEPRC frame, Speedybee F405 V4 stack, EMAX ECO II motors. Going with proven components that have strong community support.

This is exactly why I tell new pilots to build their second quad, not their first. You need to crash and repair to understand what you actually want in a custom build.

Smart component choices. That Speedybee stack is rock solid and well-documented in Betaflight. Don't forget a good 1000?F capacitor - will save your ESC from voltage spikes.

As someone who went straight to custom builds... you're going to love the flexibility. Being able to swap a motor in the field instead of grounding your quad for days is game-changing.
