landing pads ? are they actually worth it or just another thing to carry

okay so this has been bugging me for a while. every time i watch someone fly on youtube they've got one of those foldable landing pads laid out and it looks very official but i've been flying for about eight months now just landing on the ground or grass and haven't had any real issues. my mavic 3 classic seems fine.

a buddy of mine was pretty insistent that i need one especially for dusty or sandy environments and i get the argument about keeping debris out of the motors but i've also landed on a beach a couple times without a pad and nothing happened. is this more of a precautionary thing or have people actually seen damage from skipping the pad. also do the cheap ones work the same as the nicer ones because there's a huge price difference and i genuinely cant tell what you're paying extra for with the expensive versions

The debris argument is real but i think people overstate how often it actually causes a problem in normal conditions. Where it genuinely matters is sand and gravel, those environments are actually rough on motors over time even if nothing obvious happens right away. I fried a motor on my old phantom after about a season of beach flying without one, could have been coincidence but i use a pad every single time now out of habit.

as for cheap vs expensive, honestly the cheap ones are fine. it's a piece of nylon with some reflective bits on it. the pricier ones are usually just heavier duty material or have a carry bag included. i have a 15 dollar one from amazon and a 40 dollar one and they do the exact same job, the cheap one lives in my bag permanently now because i dont care if it gets wrecked.

tbh i only started using one because i fly in a field that has really long wet grass and hand launching got old fast. for that use case alone it paid for itself immediately. but if youre mostly flying in parks or pavement situations i genuinely dont think its essential, more of a nice to have. the folding ones pack down pretty small though so theres not much reason not to throw one in the bag just in case
