so ive been lurking here for a few months now trying to figure out the best way to get into fpv without completely destroying my wallet on the learning curve. i fly a mavic right now which i know is basically a different world but i want to get into actual fpv freestyle stuff.

the thing is every time i watch build tutorials i get kind of overwhelmed and i feel like by the time i source all the parts, solder everything, configure betaflight, flash ESCs etc i could have just bought something ready to go and actually been flying. but then i see people saying prebuilts are garbage and the components they use are usually cut-rate stuff jammed into a frame to hit a price point.

been looking at the DJI Avata which everyone says is more of a cinewhoop thing and not real freestyle, and then theres the iFlight Nazgul which seems more legit but im not sure if those count as actual prebuilts or more like bind-and-fly kits. also looked at some BetaFPV stuff for a smaller whoop to practice on indoors first which seems smart.

basically just want to know if going prebuilt is gonna hold me back or if thats a dumb concern when youre just starting out

honestly the prebuilt concern is way overblown for beginners. when you're first starting out you're gonna crash constantly and the last thing you want is to be troubleshooting whether your solder joint failed or if your ESC is just garbage. at least with something like an iFlight Nazgul or a Diatone you know the thing left the factory working and if something breaks you can usually figure out what actually broke vs guessing.

the BetaFPV whoop idea is actually really smart, the Meteor series or even a cheap 65mm whoop will teach you the sticks way faster than anything else and you wont destroy a 5 inch on your first five flights. once you crash a few hundred times in your living room and can actually fly without panicking, then building your own 5 inch starts making way more sense because you actually know what youre putting together and why.

the avata is fine but its a completely different thing, the flight characteristics are nothing like a freestyle quad and the locked-down DJI ecosystem will annoy you pretty quick if you want to actually tinker

i went prebuilt first (iFlight Succex-E based 5inch thing, cant remember the exact model) and tbh the components were fine, didnt feel like cheap garbage at all. flew it for like 6 months before i started building my own stuff and by that point i actually understood what i wanted in a build instead of just copying someones parts list from youtube
