first real race coming up and i have no idea what gate spacing to practice on

so ive been flying freestyle for about two years and finally signed up for a local race next month. the venue is an outdoor field and the organizer just sent over the course layout and honestly it looks way tighter than anything ive been flying through. gates are like 6-7 feet wide and some of the rhythm sections have maybe 30 feet between them which is way less than what i normally cruise through in the park.

my current setup is a 5inch running 2306 motors at 2450kv with a 45a esc stack, rates are pretty high because freestyle, and i feel really comfortable with it but i have no idea if i should be retuning specifically for race flying or just leave it and adapt. also my cam angle is sitting at like 25 degrees and i keep reading that race pilots run way steeper but i dont want to change too much before the event and mess up my muscle memory.

anyone gone through this transition? like what actually matters to dial in before you show up to a first event vs what can you just wing

cam angle honestly makes a bigger difference than people admit when you first go racing. 25 degrees is going to feel sluggish on a proper race course because youre basically flying slightly blind to where youre going at speed. i bumped mine to 35 for my first comp and it felt weird for maybe two packs then clicked. wouldnt go lower than 30 for anything with real rhythm sections.

the rates thing is more personal but id suggest at least flying a few packs with lower expo so your tiny corrections are more precise. freestyle rates with high expo can work but you get that dead zone in center stick that kills consistency on technical gates. leave the tune alone though, a known tune is way better than a fresh one the week before a race.

i did this exact same thing last year lol went from freestyle to racing and totally underestimated how different the mental side is. my actual tip is just go to the practice sessions early if they have them and dont worry about being fast, just focus on hitting every gate clean. i was so focused on my quad the first event and honestly the course familiarity mattered so much more than my setup. i also built a little gate in my backyard out of PVC before the event just to get used to flying through something specific rather than open space
