so i live pretty close to a regional airport, not a major one, just one of those small ones that mostly has like charter planes and a few small cessnas coming and going. i've been wanting to fly my mavic in a field that's probably like 2 miles from the runway give or take and i honestly have no idea what i'm supposed to do here. i downloaded the b4ufly app and it showed some kind of orange or yellow zone but i dont really understand what that means practically. like does that mean i need permission from someone or does it mean i just can't fly at all? i've heard people mention LAANC but i have no clue how that works or if it even applies to small airports like this one. i don't want to get in trouble or cause any actual problems for real aircraft obviously, just trying to figure out the rules before i do anything.

LAANC is actually pretty straightforward once you use it once. basically if the airport is part of the system (not all small ones are) you can request authorization through apps like aloft or the dji fly app itself and usually get approved in like seconds for certain altitudes. the colored grids in b4ufly correspond to the maximum altitude you can automatically get approved for ? so if it shows 0ft that doesnt mean you cant fly there, it means you need to go through a manual FAA authorization instead which takes longer.

if the airport isnt in LAANC at all you have to call the airport manager directly or contact the controlling facility. for a small regional it's usually pretty painless, they're not dealing with hundreds of calls a day. just explain what you're doing and where and they'll either say fine or give you a ceiling to stay under.

yeah i was in basically the same situation a few months ago and i just used aloft, took maybe 3 minutes and i got a message back almost instantly saying approved up to 100ft or something like that. just make sure you have your registration number handy when you do it. the app keeps your info saved after the first time so its not a big deal at all after that
