i ended up kind of compromising and got closer than i wanted to but not as close as he wanted and i dont think he was fully happy. i felt weird about it because its their job site and they're the client but also its my aircraft and my certificate on the line if something goes sideways

do you guys ever push back on clients or do you just do what they ask within reason? im still figuring out how to handle this kind of thing professionally without being awkward about it

this comes up more than people talk about. the short answer is you are the pilot in command and that is not a suggestion, its a legal designation and it means the final call on flight safety is yours period. i had to learn to say that out loud early on because clients sometimes genuinely dont understand what they're asking

what i do now is i address it before the shoot even starts. i tell clients briefly that i'll work to get them everything they need but that i make all flight decisions on the day based on conditions and safety. most people are totally fine with that when you explain it calmly and confidently, they just didnt know there were constraints. the ones who push back after that conversation are a red flag honestly

also worth noting ? if something did go wrong flying closer than you were comfortable with because a client pressured you, that is a really bad spot to be in legally and insurance-wise. your instincts were right, trust them

yeah i get the awkward feeling, i still have it sometimes and ive been doing this for two years. what i usually say is something like "let me try a few angles and show you on the screen" and then i show them the footage and most of the time they're actually happy with what i got even if it wasnt exactly what they pictured in their head. people often dont realize how good a shot looks until they see it

the scaffolding thing is genuinely sketchy btw, theres so many snag points and if theres any wind shift at all you have very little room to react. you were right to not push it
