first proper 5inch build ? not sure if my ESC choice is going to bite me

  • Members

so ive been flying whoops for about a year and finally pulling the trigger on a 5inch freestyle build. got a Apex HD frame coming in the mail, running a F7 stack i grabbed on sale a few months back. the ESC is a 45A 4in1 and honestly im second guessing it now because everywhere i read people are saying go 50A or bust for freestyle. my motors are gonna be Xing2 2306 2450kv and i really dont know if im gonna be pushing them hard enough to actually saturate a 45A ESC. i weigh in light with my camera setup so maybe its fine? idk

also just realized i should probably ask ? does anyone have experience with the Apex HD specifically? the arm thickness looks decent but ive seen some cracking issues mentioned somewhere and now i cant find the post again

45A is totally fine for 2306s on a 4S build, people way overspec their ESCs and then pat themselves on the back for it. unless youre running 6S and absolutely pinning it in every single dive you are not going to smoke a 45A with those motors. ive been running a 35A 4in1 on similar motors for like 8 months no issues. the burst ratings on most modern ESCs are also way higher than the continuous rating anyway so you have more headroom than you think.

on the Apex frame i havent personally run one but a buddy of mine has and the arm cracking thing was an early batch issue i believe, they updated the layup. worth emailing the manufacturer and asking what batch youre getting honestly.

yeah i was in the same situation a few months ago overthinking ESC amps for my first real build lol. ended up just going with what i had and its been fine. soldering the 4in1 was the part that actually stressed me out more ? make sure your iron tip is clean and you're actually getting the pads hot enough before you feed solder or youre gonna get cold joints that look fine until they dont. learned that the hard way on my first attempt, had a motor stuttering on throttle up and it took me forever to find it was just a bad solder on one of the phase wires
